The Garden of Stewardship Phase II begins...building Beds

Central City Café is a community soup kitchen ran by volunteers and is an Affiliate of Operation HOPE, ministries of Durham Memorial AME Zion Church and has been in operation since November 1990. Some 100-150 lunch-time meals are served daily Monday- Friday from the hours 11am to 1pm holidays included if their date falls on a week day. Showers are currently offered on request before or after the meal hours.

We desire and are looking at creating a section in the soup kitchen for families which will include a window herb garden, books and child and family seating in the Kids Corner.

We are in collaboration with Sheehan Health Network who has given us the use of 1200 sq. ft. of their land to create a community garden. We have just completed 12 rolls of this organic community garden known as the Garden of Stewardship where anyone may assist us in planting vegetables for the soup kitchen and learn how to qualify for their own garden bed in the garden. The Garden of Stewardship is a community garden created to benefit Central City Café and family’s organizations and volunteers who assist us in building of the garden. There is lots of work to be completed before harvest time.
